Journal of Diabetes Nursing Vol 10 No 4 2006 Traditional models of diabetes care depended upon individual ‘compliance’ that could often be difficult for the individual and could lead to poor glycaemic control (Walker, 2000). This led to a reconsideration of the traditional model and the development of the empowerment approach (Funnell et al, 1991). The empowerment model of care is a patientcentred approach, as illustrated here:
